Guide 7: Curracloe Beach, Co. Wexford

Guide 7: Curracloe Beach, Co. Wexford

Location: Located on the southeastern coast of Ireland in County Wexford. Curracloe Beach is about 10 KM (6 miles) north of Wexford Town. View Map

About: Curracloe Beach is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland but also a site regularly used by Hollywood. Its long stretch of soft, golden sand was used as a filming location for the iconic D-Day landing scenes in Steven Spielberg’s "Saving Private Ryan" and also featured in the movie "Brooklyn." Curracloe has a rich natural heritage, with its extensive dunes and adjacent Raven Nature Reserve providing a haven for wildlife.

Folklore: According to ancient Celtic lore, Curracloe's sands are said to have formed from the apron strings of a mythical woman who hung her apron on a nearby bush to gather shells, only to have it blown away and transformed into a sprawling, 11km beach.

Get there: 15 minutes north of Wexford Town via the R739 road. From Dublin, it's about a 2-hour drive south via the M11 motorway.

- By Car: From Wexford Town, take the R741 road north, then follow the signs for Curracloe. The drive takes about 20 minutes. There is ample parking available near the beach, but it can get busy during peak times, so arrive early to secure a spot.
- Public Transport:
You can take a bus from Wexford Town to Curracloe Village, followed by a short walk to the beach. Check the local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.

What to do: Easy!! Sunrise if you're up early enough. Sea swim, obviously. Walk the 11km stretch and maybe catch some seals or porpoises on the way - if you're lucky. Walk to the Raven Nature Reserve or explore the forest trail - it's a 7km loop that runs parallel to the beach & takes about 90 minutes.
