About: Knocknarea is steeped in Irish mythology and history. The summit is crowned by a massive cairn known as Queen Maeve's Tomb, believed to be the final resting place of the legendary Queen Maeve of Connacht. This Neolithic monument, dating back over 5,000 years, is older than the Pyramids of Egypt.

Get there: Knocknarea is located about 8 km west of Sligo town. The most popular starting point for the hike is the car park at Strandhill which a lot of people will know for the epic surf. You can also follow Sarah's advice and park in Sligo Rugby club for €3.

From Sligo town, take the R292 towards Strandhill, and you'll find signposts directing you to the Knocknarea parking area.

The Hike: Perfect for catching sunset, it's a 6km loop with stunning views over Sligo and Ballisodare Bay.

It's quite a strenuous hike, with over 500 steps to tackle, so it's recommended you have good footwear and supplies.

Once you're up there after roughly an hour of hiking, you'll see the Cairn. Please do not attempt to climb it out of respect.
