Location: Clara Vale, Co. Wicklow. 50km south of Dublin. View Map
History: The reserve is named after the nearby village of Clara and has been a protected area for several decades. The reserve is part of the larger Wicklow Mountains National Park, known for its diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes.
Get there:
- By Car: From Dublin, take the M11 southbound and exit at junction 16 for Rathnew. Follow the R752 to Rathdrum, then take local roads to Clara Vale. The journey takes about an hour and a half.
- Public Transport: Take a train from Dublin to Rathdrum, which is the closest town. From Rathdrum, you can catch a taxi to Clara Vale. The train journey takes around an hour, and the taxi ride is about 15 minutes.
What to do: Here there are 3 marked loops to choose from ranging from 1-3 hours. Each trail is fairly low level with only a few inclines along the way. Each trail will bring you through gorgeous woodland and past the Avonmore River and along the way. The nature reserve is also a haven for bird watching with popular species like dipper and kingfishers regularly spotted.
