E-Bike Basics

Welcome to the Bleubird community and congratulations on your new purchase of a Bleubird e-bike. You've just opened a whole new world of adventures. The information below will help get you started with your new Bleubird e-bike.

Your e-bike should arrive 90% pre-assembled. The instructions that follow are intended to serve as a guide in unboxing and getting familiar with your new e-bike. The e-bike may require minor adjustments upon unboxing as vibrations caused during transit can sometimes cause fixings on your e-bike to loosen. The initial setup of your e-bike should be carried out by someone who has basic mechanical knowledge and is competent to carry out the steps outlined below. Where possible we recommend seeking professional help from a reputable, certified bicycle mechanic.

> Summit

  • Unbox: Open the bike box and remove the Summit from the box. Help may be needed lifting the bike out of the box. Place the bike on the upright on the floor. The front fork protector will stabilise the bike so it can sit upright on it's own.
Remove all packaging, taking care not to damage the bike componets or frame with any sharp objects. Incase you need to return the bike, we recommend holding onto the packaging, otherwise please recycle what can be recycled, such as cardboard and hard plastics.
  • In the box: Included in the box should be the following; Bleubird Summit E-bike. Bleubird battery charger. Assembly tool kit. 2 Battery keys. Please ensure all these items are present. If anything is missing or damaged contact Bleubird or your local retailler immediately for assistance.
  • Front wheel assembly:
    > Locate the front brake disc and front wheel. Remove these from the packaging, taking care when removing any cable ties or packaging securing these in position during transit, so as not to cause damage to the components or your e-bike.
    > Secure the disc brake to the front wheel using the screws provided. Tighten using the hex key provided according to the Recommended Torque Values section of
the included manual. Ensure the disc is attached correctly so that the arrows on the disc match the direction of travel of the bike.
    > Locate the quick-release front axle and slide through the front wheel. Loosely tighten the quick- release nut to the end of the front axle. The quick- release lever of the front axle should be on the opposite side to the brake disc.
    > Carefully slide the front wheel into position, taking particular care to manoeuvre the front brake disc between the brake pads, until the axle sits between the slots on the front fork.
    > Once the front wheel is located correctly in position in the front fork, tighten the nuts on the front axle by hand. To secure, push the quick release lever into position so the front wheel is locked within the front fork. The quick-release lever should be flush, upright in line with the fork.
  • Attaching your pedals:
    > Locate the pedals within your e-bike packaging. Remove the packaging from the pedals. There is a right pedal and a left pedal, denoted by a L and a R stamped
    on the pedal.
    > Start by screwing the right pedal axle by hand into the crank arm in a clockwise direction, or towards the front of the bike. It should go in easily. When it gets to the end, use the spanner or Allen key to tighten it fully. Use only a small amount of force to tighten. You may wish to apply grease to the axle to make it easier. You can then start screwing the left pedal axle into the crank arm in an anti-clockwise direction (opposite to normal threading), or towards the front of the bike.
  • Attaching your handlebars: To save space during shipping, the handle bar comes unattached. To attach the handlebar remove the 4 screws from the handlebar clamp using the hex key provided.
    > Insert handlebar into location, replace clamp and re-insert the 4 screws. Tighten to the appropriate torque as found in the Recommended Torque Values section of the included manual.
  • Adjust seat: The seat is held in place with a quick release clamp. You should be able to easily open the clamp and adjust the seat to your desired height and close the clamp again. There should be enough force in the clamp to hold your weight when riding. If this is not the case, you can simply tighten the clamp by rotating the lever clockwise, or vice versa to loosen.

  • SERIAL NUMBER:Your e-bike has a unique serial number associated with it. The serial number is located on the front of the head tube, just below the Bleubird logo. Please record your serial number in page 5 of this manual. You will be asked for your e-bike's serial number for any warranty claims. You may also be asked to provide this number to law enforcement in the event that your e-bike is stolen.
  • COMPONENTS: Ensure all components are properly secured and correctly tightened before riding. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death. All components should be tensioned to the torque specified in the Recommended Torque Values section of the included manual. Refer to the Table of Contents at the beginning of the manual for the page number of this section. This includes but is not limited to; pedals, handlebars, handlebar clamp, crank arms, seat, and seat post clamp.
  • Make sure that the stem and the seat are tightened so they cannot be twisted out of alignment by hand.
  • Ensure all cables and connectors at the front of the e-bike are securely connected or certain components may not work, including the front light, the brake cut-off switches and the LCD display. The brake cut-off switches shut the motor off as soon as the rider engages the brakes. If these switches are not operational, it will take longer to slow down, which in some riding situations could cause injury or death to the rider.

First Ride

> Riding Position

  • Check that your saddle is positioned at the proper height. Sit on the saddle facing forward and place the ball of your foot on the pedal at its lowest point. Your leg should be mostly straight at this point with a slight bend at the knee. You should be able to pedal your e-bike without over-extending your leg when the pedal is at its lowest point. Your legs may be over-extended if it causes your hips to move side to side when pedalling. Resolve this by lowering the seat position slightly. Until you are at a point where you are confident riding your e-bike, adjust the saddle height so your feet can still be placed firmly on the ground.
  • Ensure your seat post has a minimum of 100mm inserted into the frame. Failure to insert past the minimum insertion point will place undue stress on these components, increasing the risk of sudden failure, which may lead to harm, injury or death to the rider.
  • If you need to adjust the angle of your seat, loosen the nut on the top bracket of the seat, move the seat to the desired angle, then tighten the nut. The location of the nut is shown below. Ensure the nut is tightened to the correct torque as found in the Recommended Torque Values section.

> Tyres

  • Check that the tyre and the tyre bead are seated just inside the rim. Inflate your e-bike tyres to a pressure that is within the recommended range printed on the tyre's sidewalls.
  • When inflating, gradually inflate in 5-10 PSI increments while checking to ensure the tyre bead is fully seated on the rim. If you notice the tyre bead is not fully seated at any point during inflation, deflate the tyre completely and reseat the tyre bead before re-inflating.

> Controls

  • Hold down the power button on the controls located on the top of the unit on the left handlebar until the display comes on.
  • Select a level of pedal assist using the + and - buttons on the controls. Pedal assist level 1 is the lowest level of assist and pedal assist level 5 is the highest level of assist. Level zero will provide no assistance.
  • To turn on the headlight, press and hold the + button on the controls. The battery must be inside the e-bike in order for the headlight to work. Repeat this process to turn the headlight off.
  • Engage walk assist mode by pressing and holding the button on the controls. This will engage the motor on a low power as an aide when walking with the e-bike. Use
caution so as not to engage walk assist mode unwittingly.
  • In general, electric e-bikes are heavier than their non-electric counterparts. This makes walking the e- bike a more strenuous activity. To make walking the e-
bike easier, your Summit e-bike is equipped with walk assist mode. If you hold down the down arrow on the controls, the motor will engage at a speed similar to a slow walk. When the walk assist mode is engaged a 'walk' indicator will appear on the display. To deactivate walk assist mode simply release the down arrow on the controls.
  • When first riding your e-bike, take care to start slowly in a low level of pedal assist. Take your first ride in a safe area away from cars, other cyclists, pedestrians, or other potentially dangerous obstacles. Only move up the pedal assist levels when you feel comfortable and confident and you have ample experience operating your new e-bike riding your e-bike. The higher pedal assist levels will accelerate you to higher speeds more quickly. Take care when riding the e-bike at any speed.

  • Failure to adhere to warnings and guidelines in this manual can lead to serious harm, injury, or death. Damage sustained by the e-bike from failing to follow instructions, guidelines and warnings in this manual is not covered under Bleubird's warranty.

> Gears

  • The Summit e-bike comes with a Shimano Tourney 7-Speed freewheel cassette. (This is the cluster of sprockets on the rear wheel of the e-bike). This allows the rider to maintain a comfortable level of effort and pedalling speed throughout different terrains and gradients.
  • The gears can be changed via the shifter on the right handlebar. It works as a 'twist-shift'.
  • Do not attempt to change gears too quickly or when cycling uphill as doing so could cause the chain to fall off and the rider to lose control, which could result in serious injury. If the chain falls off, turn the e-bike off before fixing the chain. If you do not and the motor engages whilst you are attempting to replace the chain you could sustain injury.

> Brakes

  • The Summit e-bike is equipped with 180mm Tektro Aires mechanical disc brakes to ensure that you can stop quickly even at high speeds.

  • The left brake lever activates the brake on the rear wheel and the right brake lever activates the brake on the front wheel. The left brake lever should always be applied before and while the front brake is also being applied. If only the front brake is applied while slowing or stopping quickly, the rider may be ejected over the front handlebars. This could result in serious harm, injury, or death. To avoid this always apply even pressure to both brakes when slowing down or stopping.

  • Before riding, ensure the brake lever does not touch the handlebars when fully applied. If it does, screw or unscrew the barrel adjuster to increase the tension in the brake cable. If this does not fix the problem, take the e-bike to an experienced bicycle mechanic for further adjustment.

Note: Brake discs will become hot during use and will stay hot for a short period of time after use. This is due to the high amount of friction between the brake pads and the brake discs.

Battery

Your e-bike comes with a 36V 15.0Ah lithium ion battery. The battery is assembled using the latest 21700 cells from Samsung. Key operating features of the battery can be found below:

> Charging

  • Locate the charge port on the side of the battery. You can charge the battery from this port while the battery is attached to or detached from your e-bike. To minimise the risk of dropping your battery, it is recommended to charge whilst the battery is attached to your e-bike.
  • Your battery comes with almost a full charge. You should plug in your battery when you first receive it to ensure it is fully charged prior to your first ride.
  • The battery can be charged while attached or detached from the e-bike.
  • Do not charge the battery with chargers other than chargers provided by Bleubird or one of their authorised stockists.
  • Only charge the battery indoors in dry environments between 10°C and 25°C.
  • The charger will automatically stop charging once the battery reaches its full capacity. The light on the charger will be red when the battery is charging and will turn green when charging has finished.
  • Avoid leaving the charger plugged in for prolonged periods of time when the battery is fully charged. Do not charge the battery if you notice the battery is damaged, excessively hot, leaking, is giving off an unusual odour, or is discoloured.
  • Charging the battery should take 4-6 hours from empty. Store the battery indoors in a dry environment, away from heat or flame sources and out of direct sunlight.
  • The charger may become hot when charging. Use caution and avoid touching the body of the charger.

> Removing Battery

  • Your e-bike's battery comes with a set of keys that are used to release the battery from the frame. Each battery has a unique set of keys. Ensure you keep one key in a safe place in case you loose one.
  • When removing the battery from the frame, turn the key anti-clockwise to release the battery. Use caution when removing your battery. If your battery impacts the ground and is damaged, discontinue use
and contact Bleubird or your local stockist immediately. Damage may not be visible after dropping your battery. Dropping your battery may adversely effect its performance and its safety. Bleubird's warranty does not cover battery damage incurred by dropping. To minimise the risk of dropping your battery, only remove the battery from the frame when necessary.

> Keeping your Battery Healthy

  • If you know you won't be using the battery for more than a few days keep it charged at about 75% capacity. At 75% capacity the battery will degrade less than at higher charge levels.
  • Periodically check your battery's charge level about once per month and charge back up to 75% if necessary.
  • If you want to increase the number of cycles your battery will last for, charge your battery to 100% a few hours before you plan to ride it. For example, if you ride the e-bike and the charge level falls to 50% but you plan to use the e-bike again in a few days, wait until the night before you plan to use it again to charge it up to 100%. When the battery is not in use this is healthier for the individual cells over the lifespan of the battery.
  • If you are not using your e-bike for a prolonged period of time, it is recommended that the battery is stored in a safe, dry environment between 10°C and 25°C. If the battery is stored below 10°C for prolonged periods of time it will adversely impact the lifespan of your battery.

> Safety

  • Do not submerge the battery in liquid of any kind. Do not touch the terminals at the base of the battery.
  • The battery should not be excessively difficult to attach or detach from the frame. To avoid the risk of damage or personal injury, do not force the battery.
  • Battery charging times may increase with battery age and usage.
  • If the battery is not charging, discontinue charging and contact Bleubird or an authorised Bleubird stockist immediately.
