Location: The harbour village of Howth is found on the northern edge of Dublin. This picturesque peninsula is where you'll start (there's a Dart station there). View Map
History: Viking settlements in Howth date back to the 9th century and Norman arrivals to the the 12th. Howth Castle dates to the 15th century.
Get there: You can take the DART train, which has a scenic ride along the coast. The journey takes about 30 minutes, with trains running frequently. Once you arrive at Howth station, the cliff path is a short walk away. To drive, Howth is accessible via the R105 road, with ample parking available near the village.
The Hike: The Howth Cliff Path is a looped trail that offers several walking routes, ranging from 6 to 12 km. The paths vary in difficulty, but all offer spectacular views of Dublin Bay, the Baily Lighthouse, and Ireland’s Eye. The most popular route is the Purple Loop, which is about 7 km long and takes around 2 hours to complete.
The Beach: This hidden gem is tucked away beneath the cliffs and can be accessed via a steep, narrow path that branches off from the main trail. To find it, keep an eye out for a small, unmarked trail that leads down towards the water. The descent can be tricky, so be cautious, especially if the weather is wet.
