Our Eco Side

Our Eco Side

At the heart of Bleubird is a passion for protecting the planet we love. From the outset, I had this focus in mind, and everything we now do is driven by our passion and obligation to protect our planet. Oceans, Mountains & everywhere in-between. As we continue to grow, I will keep challenging everything we do, big and small.

As a team we feel a profound responsibility to hold ourselves accountable, build an authentic business, and recognise our environmental and social impact. We are passionate about doing what is good for our planet – or trying to at least.

Founder, Matt, at home in the

One tree planted for every order

Trees...

For every order that is made with us online, we plant a tree. It is that simple. We've done this from the beginning and it now comes as standard for us. It's great to see more brands and businesses doing this too.

This planet needs more trees for all sorts of reasons (read more below).

Our process is automatic. We have a system integrated into our website which automatically informs our Tree Planting Partners of your order. They can then get planting asap!

You'll receive your tree planting certificate via email after you ordering.

Why trees?

Why trees?

Between 1990 & 2016, the world lost 1.3 million square kilometres of forests due to deforestation. Culprits such as farming, mining, drilling and plantations combine for more than half of all deforestation.

Trees help clean the air we breathe, provide the oxygen with breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1 billion people & crucially absorb harmful carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

Cutting trees both adds carbon dioxide to the air and removes the ability to absorb existing carbon dioxide. If tropical deforestation were a country, according to the World Resources Institute, it would rank third in carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions, behind China and the U.S.

So, we reckon trees are pretty important. Although we aren't able to stop deforestation, we can certainly help a little by planting new trees for every order we receive. As we continue to grow, so will the trees 🙌

Plastics...

Planting trees is just one of many eco sides of Bleubird. Another huge part of Bleubird's Eco Side is the attention to detail in our packaging.

We've had quite a journey with our packaging over the years and we're proud to be getting closer to being as plastic free as possible. Read more below...

We've had quite a journey with our packaging over the years and we're proud to be getting closer to being as plastic free as possible.

Our Packaging

Our Packaging

Only 9% of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced to date is being recycled. 73% of worldwide beach litter is plastic, 165 million tons has ended up in our oceans & 2 million plastic bags are used around the world EVERY MINUTE - it's madness and it's sickening and it's not something we wish to be a part of.

We have invested in making sure our packaging is not going to be floating up on beaches in 20 years time. As with most online business, packaging is extremely important to ensure your new products arrive with you safely.

The majority of our products are packed and stored individually in clear bags. These bags look like plastic, feel like plastic, serve the same purpose as traditional plastic, but they are biodegradable - they won't be around for centuries. They will start to decompose naturally after year of manufacturing and if disposed of in industrial composting, they will disintegrate back into the earth after a few months. These are a much better alternative to standard plastic bags, however, some of our bags are still manufactured with an oil-based polymer and produce carbon dioxide in the degrading process. We are therefore working on an alternative paper-based product packaging method to replace these biodegradable plastic bags and hope to launch this across our range in the next 12-18 months.

A more recent change... paper

One major change we have made in the past 12 months is switching from biodegradable plastic mailing bags to fully recyclable and biodegradable paper mailing bags.

While paper is a great replacement for plastic, it is also important that the paper we use is responsibly sourced and is not contributing to the major issue of deforestation. To ensure this, all the paper we use is FSC-certified.

Our paper mailing bags are strong enough to ensure your order arrives safely with you, but they are also intended for return use also. They have a secondary glue strip which you can send unsuitable items back to us in, reusing and reducing.

Bleubird in Malawi

One of the biggest and most exciting projects we have been working on over the past couple of years is Bleubird in Malawi.

This is a project that we manage ourselves as we work closely with the Team at Mulanje Mission Hospital. It is challenging and takes up a lot more resources than just donating cash, but we are so excited to see the direct impact that our community’s purchases have contributed so far.

Seeing the first hand results and the benefit for the people in the Mulanje area is super rewarding and we are really excited about what is yet to come with this.

This is a large project, so we have a dedicated page for our project in Malawi which you can read more about by clicking the button below.

Fabrics

With all our new product development, we are focused on ensuring the materials we use to create the products are of the best quality and have the lowest environmental impact possible.

Currently, our whole Wear Adventure range is recycled. That includes all jackets, all fleece and all gilets. The zips on the Tabor Jacket Cropped and Horizon Fleece are also recycled. We use recycled polyester fabric and organic cotton in our Venture Collection, which is also printed using water-based inks. Our Nordic Robe collection is also made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles for the external and internal fabric. The only thing that isn’t recycled is the zips, but we’re working on that. All our beanies and bobbles are 98% recycled polyester and our socks are made from 80% organic cotton.

Our Adrift range is currently not recycled or organic, but it is printed with water-based inks. We are working hard to get this on the right track. There will always be more we can do. For now, we're focused on making sure that every decision we make with our new product development is the right one with the information we have from our research at that time.

It's a long road...

It's a long road...

In 2023 we are prioritising our communication around the Bleubird ‘Eco Side’. The good, the bad, and the sh*t that comes with it.

We want to educate and inform our community on the industry we have found ourselves in and we want to ensure we do as much of the right thing as possible and share the learnings from our mistakes.

We don’t think it’s possible to run a ‘sustainable’ fashion brand, but we are striving to do as much as we can to limit the negative impact we have on our planet and protect what it is we love.

Thanks,

Matt.
