History: Downpatrick Head has a rich history dating back to the 5th century when St. Patrick founded a church here. The name "Downpatrick" comes from the Irish "Dún Pádraig," meaning "Patrick's Fort." Legend has it that St. Patrick struck the ground with his crozier, causing a piece of the headland to break away, forming the iconic sea stack known as Dún Briste ("Broken Fort").
